Insider's Guide to Wine + Wonder

Port Macquarie, Wauchope, Camden Haven

Do as much or as little of the trail as you wish! Our listings are in no particular order, so pick your spots of interest, plan your itinerary and hit the road.

Stop 1 Right in the heart of our CBD (aka ‘Bar district’) is Wakulda, an immersive, sound and light projection onto the Port Macquarie Historic Courthouse, on Clarence Street, every night of the week at 6.30pm and 8.30pm. This 10-minute production will envelop the audience, telling the important stories that make up the rich history of Port Macquarie from our traditional owners of the land, the Birpai people, right through to the current day of the Bicentenary of European settlement in April 2021. It's free and no bookings required. So why not add some Wonder to your Wine, and pop by either before or after your night out!

WHILE YOU'RE AT CASSEGRAIN WINES...Lunch at the award winning Twotriplefour by Bills is a special experience, with a locally sourced, highly seasonal, farm-to-table menu (you must try the mouth watering duck parfait with fig & port jam). Also unique to this place is the offer of truly next level Farmhouse picnic hampers (pre-order). Be sure to add a bottle of Cassegrain Wine then find a spot by the vines and lake on Cassegrain's spectacular property to enjoy. Open from 10-4, Wed-Sun (with platters available from the Cellar Door on Mon/Tues). Feeling adventurous? Take a ride through the vines with Port Macquarie Horse Riding Centre, located on the grounds at Cassegrain. Bookings advisable.

Stop 5 on the map is Bago Maze & Winery, a 35 minute drive south-west of Port's CBD. The road contains a short unsealed section, and after recent floods can be a little bumpy, so take it nice and slow! It's well worth it though, as this is one extraordinary winery! This family-owned vineyard has one of the world's largest hedge mazes, along with a charming cellar door with a Russian-themed chocolate shop. The large timber verandah overlooks the maze and the vines, making it the ideal spot to enjoy a wine tasting, cheese or charcuterie board or a coffee. A great day out the whole family will love. Tip: Book for the maze online before you set off. Open 7 days.

At stop 6 we discover that Art & Wine are a perfect pairing, at Long Point Vineyard and Gallery. Head 25 mins south of Port's CBD along the coastal roads, to the charming Lake Cathie area.
