Matt Rinkin left the Mid North Coast 25 years ago to build his career and chase adventures overseas - ski seasons in Colorado, English classes in Japan and teaching in London.
After a short stint in Sydney, the couple moved to the US for 10 years where they lived on campus with their two children at a school where Matt was teaching until it was time for the next adventure.
All options were on the table including Aspen in Colorado, Lake Tahoe in California, and Honolulu, Hawaii. In the end, the family chose to move to Port Macquarie to make the most of the more affordable property prices, the beautiful beaches and forest hinterland.
“The lack of snow and ice hockey was a compromise,” laughed Matt, “But after only a couple of weeks here we knew this is where we wanted to put down roots.”
Matt was offered a remote position running the summer boarding school program for a school in Hawaii. He often works from The Hub co-working space where he can get focused and connect with other local business people.
Since moving here, Devon has enrolled in a Masters at Charles Sturt University and works as a vet at a local clinic. The children have settled into day care and primary school. As an expert in education, Matt compliments the quality of the local schools. “There are great education options in the area with public, private and nature-based schools. That was an important factor in our family’s choice to move here.”
